Wolf carving on Caribou shovel.
Scenes
of wildlife in Alaska interacting - like these caribou and wolves in their
continual struggle to survive - are carved into a single moose horn with no added
materials.

Dall
sheep horns like this one are often picked up by hikers after the animal
perishes in Alaska's wilds. Tony carves images like these two majestic rams
resting on the cliffs they typically inhabit. Mounted on a black walnut base.

Antlers can also be cut and
made into smaller carvings like these sections of moose antlers with a resting
sheep (left) or a fishing bear (right) carved into them.
At
the opposite end of the spectrum, an entire set of large moose antlers can be
made into a glass-topped coffee table, supported by a hardwood base. Each antler
can be carved with unrelated outdoor scenes or each antler can be used to depict
a part of one unique scene.
Other options for horn carvings include boats, planes, people, and
combinations of art mediums.

Fishing boats and planes are some of the non-animal carvings
I have done.
Hunting
scenes for clients who want to
remember an adventure
are another
type of carving. I also have a fellow
artisan who does basketry and
combines
it with my carvings.

Since no two horns or antlers are alike, each carving is unique.
Each horn has its own size, thickness and color -- all of which affect how the
artist takes into account when determining and creating the final scene. Because
of these variables as well as customer requests and who provides the horn for
carving, the final price of the finished artwork will vary somewhat. However,
the pieces on this page sell for between $200 (the single sheep on the small
piece of moose horn) and $3500 (the moose antler table). Many small moose horn
carvings sell for less than $500, but most sheep horn carvings sell for $500 to
$2,000. Please email tony@TonyRuss.com with
any questions; provide your telephone number if you would like to discuss
specifics of a carving.
